Faults we get called out for in Johor Bahru
Not cooling, but the fan is running. The most common call. Usually a refrigerant loss, a fouled coil, or a failed capacitor on the outdoor unit. Refrigerant does not get consumed, so if it is low, something is leaking and the leak is the actual repair.
Water dripping from the indoor unit, or an air cond leaking water onto the floor. Nearly always a blocked condensate drain, occasionally a cracked drain tray or a unit that has shifted out of level. It is a cheap fix caught early and a ceiling repair caught late. A drain line clear and flush starts at RM 80 and takes under an hour; a cracked tray means the indoor unit comes down, which is RM 180 to 280 with the pump. If water is dripping now, switch the unit off at the wall before it reaches the plug point and message us, because the damage compounds by the hour rather than by the day.
Tripping the ELCB or breaker. An earth fault, usually in the compressor windings or a chafed cable at the outdoor unit. This one gets tested properly before anything is replaced, because a compressor is the most expensive wrong guess in the trade.
Noisy operation. A rattle is usually mountings or a loose cover. A grinding noise from the indoor unit is the blower bearing. A hard metallic knock from the outdoor unit is the compressor and it is a replace-or-scrap conversation.
Outdoor unit corroded or seized. More common here than inland, and covered in its own section below.
Remote not responding, or the unit ignoring it. Often the receiver board rather than the remote. We test the board before selling a PCB.
Smell when it starts up. Mould in the blower wheel and drain pan. This is a chemical wash rather than a repair, and we will say so instead of charging you for a repair visit.

The coastal problem: when the outdoor unit is the repair
Outdoor units in Johor Bahru fail differently from inland ones, and it is worth knowing before you pay to have an indoor unit stripped.
Salt-bearing coastal air corrodes the aluminium fins on a condenser coil and the steel of the casing. Along the Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat corridor, industrial particulate settles on top of that. A coil in that condition cannot reject heat properly. The unit runs longer, the head pressure climbs, the running current climbs with it, and the symptom the owner notices is a room that never quite gets cold and an electricity bill that has crept up.
The diagnostic consequence: when a JB unit is not cooling and the indoor side looks clean, we test the outdoor unit first. Fin combing and a proper condenser clean fixes a meaningful share of these calls without a single part being replaced. Where corrosion has gone through the fin stack, we say so and price a coil or a unit replacement honestly rather than selling a gas top-up that will be gone in two months.
A rising electricity bill is usually a fault, not a habit
Owners nearly always read a higher bill as more usage. Usually it is not.
A unit with a fouled coil or low refrigerant still runs. It just runs longer to reach the same temperature, and the compressor is the largest single electrical load in most homes. If your usage has not changed and the bill has climbed and stayed there, that may justify an inspection rather than rationing.
This is why running current at the outdoor unit gets measured on every diagnosis. Current above the unit's rating plate is direct evidence that it is working harder than it was built to, and it usually points at the cause before anything is dismantled.
What a repair visit actually involves
So there are no surprises about what the RM 80 buys.
The technician starts at the indoor unit: filters, coil face, drain line, blower wheel, and the temperature difference between the return air and the outlet. That difference alone separates a refrigerant problem from an airflow problem in the first five minutes.
Then the outdoor unit: running current against the rating plate, capacitor under test rather than by eye, fan operation, coil condition, and suction and discharge pressures where the fault points that way. Electrical faults get an insulation test before any part is called dead.
You get told what is wrong, what the part costs, what the labour costs, and how long it will take. If we are not certain, we say we are not certain and what the next test would be. What does not happen is a part being replaced on a hunch and charged for either way.

When repair stops being the right answer
We will tell you to stop spending in four situations: an inverter PCB quoted above RM 600 on a unit over five years old; a compressor failure on any unit over seven years old; an R22 system needing major refrigerant work, because the gas is being phased out under Malaysia's HCFC phase-out programme and long-term supply is not assured; and a third significant repair inside twelve months. In each of those the money is better spent on installing a replacement unit, and we will quote that instead rather than taking the repair.
If the same fault comes back
Within the 30-day labour warranty we come back and there is no second labour charge on the same fault. If the fault returns because the underlying cause was something we identified and you chose not to have fixed, we will remind you what it was in writing rather than argue about it on the doorstep. Regular aircond service and chemical wash prevents most of the repeat calls we get.
